To minimise the damaging effects, water should be removed from diesel fuel prior to the final stages of solid particulate filtration.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What causes water\ncondensation in diesel fuel tanks?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diesel fuel tanks are subject to water\ncondensation because unlike gasoline, diesel fuel has no vapor pressure to\ndisplace air. When a fuel tank is warm, the air expands and is forced out. As\nthe tank cools at night, humid air is drawn back into the tank and water\ncondenses out on the cooler tank walls. This is one reason to keep diesel fuel\ntanks topped off if possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional water can enter a fuel system\nthrough an open fill port, a defective tank, or when rain enters a drum that\nhas been left open. Or it can simply be transferred from another tank that is\ncontaminated with water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Problems caused by\nwater in diesel fuel systems<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rust<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The presence of water in diesel fuel systems\ncauses a variety of problems. Water causes steel and iron components to rust,\nforming loose particles of iron oxide. These rust particles can quickly clog\nfuel filters. Micron sized and smaller rust particles may pass though fuel\nfilters to reach injectors, scoring surfaces and ruining fuel injection spray\npatterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bacteria<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standing water at the bottom of a fuel tank\nprovides an excellent environment for a wide variety of soil bacteria to\nflourish. These bacteria enter through tank openings and during dispensing.\nFuel and water form an interface that provides a comfortable home where\nbacteria can feed on diesel fuel in a moist environment. These bacteria form a\nslime layer that often breaks free to rapidly clog fuel filters and disperse\nbacteria throughout the fuel system. A fuel filter that is plugged with\nbacterial slime will have a dark layer of wet gel on the upstream surface.\nLiving bacteria pump out acids as a waste product, further corroding and\ndamaging fuel system components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reduced lubrication<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, any water that makes its way through\nto the fuel injectors reduces the lubrication properties of the diesel fuel\nalong the way. This leads to galling, premature wear, damaged injection tips,\nand further corrosion of sensitive fuel system mechanical components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When is the best\ntime to remove water?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When diesel fuel contaminated with water is\npumped from a fuel tank, the water leaves the tank as visible floating droplets\nwhich are relatively easy to remove from the fuel using a quality fuel\/water\nseparator. If the water is not removed prior to passing through the pump, the\ndiesel fuel\/water mixture forms a stable emulsion making it very difficult to\nremove the water. Water dispersed this way may pass through the fuel system to\nbe burned, but more likely some will settle in, and corrode sensitive\ncomponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The effect of\nbiodiesel<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For environmental and economic reasons,\nbiodiesel is sometimes mixed with petroleum. Using biodiesel at a concentration\nof 5% makes removing water more difficult. When biodiesel concentrations are in\nexcess of 20%, it is nearly impossible to remove the water from the diesel\nfuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many primary filtration devices do not have\nthe capability to remove water efficiently, leaving the engine prey to pump and\ninjector damage and reduced efficiency.
