What are your thoughts about the changes the Government wants to do to MOTs?
If you don’t know already read more on what the Government plans to do…
The IGA is seeking the Shadow Transport Secretary’s (Louise Haigh MP) support to protect the current 3-1-1 MOT schedule.
Stuart James, IGA Chief Executive had a lot to say on the situation, “Our current MOT testing system ensures that the UK roads are amongst the safest in the world. The DfT says lengthening the MOT period is taking away a financial burden from motorists however any extension to the MOT test schedule will be highly detrimental to the UK’s road safety record and will cause extra costs to vehicle owners long-term.”
Shadow Transport Secretary’s Pros for 4-1-1 MOT schedule:
- Takes away a financial burden for motorists
- Environmental impact
- Advancing vehicle technology
- Saving on greenhouse emissions
- Modern cars are more reliable
IGA’s arguments Against the 4-1-1 MOT schedule:
- It will cause extra costs to vehicle owners long-term
- Detrimental to the UK’s road safety record
- Vehicle defects going undetected meaning a more problematic, dangerous and costly vehicle repairs
- 1 million vehicles failed their MOT in year 3 in 2019 due to emissions (45,000 extra vehicles could pollute at higher levels until the 4th year)
- Fail rate of modern cars at first test is 14%
- 1759 casualties were caused by vehicle defects in 2021
- They are only taking care of the more wealthier people who can afford to run a vehicle of 4 years old or less
After seeing both arguments, what do you think?
