The most common stolen vehicle parts have been reported to be:

Thefts of steering wheels have risen since 2017 by 133%. Demand for airbags, gear sticks and dashboard components are also rising. Stolen parts are then being sold to garages.

In the beginning of 2022, 20% of all car insurance theft claims were because of a stolen catalytic converter, showing that despite the 4 year gap, vehicle part theft is still ongoing.

Alex Hammond-Chambers-Borgnis, Director at LV General Insurance said “This is being fuelled by the fact car parts are currently in very high demand as a result of global supply chain disruption, which is adding to the problem.”

There is a very high chance that vehicle part theft will increase even more in 2022 due to the cost of living crisis.
