Government plans to back self-driving vehicles, giving it a budget of £100 million resulting in self-driving vehicles potentially being on the roads by 2025. Included with this it prioritises safety through new laws and creates thousands of jobs across the UK. This could be as many as 38,000 jobs.

Vehicles such as coaches, lorries and cars could be seen on motorways in the next year as plans come into place about a new legislation which will allow for the rollout of self-driving vehicles in 2025.

Within the budget that the government is providing, they will be researching the performance of self-driving cars in poor weather conditions, how they interact with pedestrians, other vehicles and cyclists. This is to ensure they are safe for the roads and work as effectively as someone driving the vehicle.

There are plans of the self-driving vehicles to be used for shopping deliveries and transport such as around an airport.

Like any topic, there is mixed opinions on the introduction to self-driving cars.

Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps said, “The benefits of self-driving vehicles have the potential to be huge. Not only can they improve people’s access to education and other vital services, they will make our roads safer by reducing the dangers of driver error in road collisions.”

AA President, Edmund King said, “The automotive world is changing rapidly and so the government is right to embrace the positive changes offered by this new technology.”

As a society it shows that we are willing to develop and welcome new technology, however is it too soon for self-driving vehicles? What do you think? Let us know!
